5pm zoom meeting start time 5pm

Attendants: Justin Amevor, Ann Jicha, Imogen Cleaver-Stigum, Vrandol Perez

We made a groupme group for the team, Website format Glitch (HTML), decided who wants to present vs just answer questions (we will all present together), discussed what is our argument about the movie. We do not know exactly what we are required to talk about (expecting more info from prof on this as we get closer to the date). Ann sent the professor the link to the site.

TO DO LIST

This weekend: watch the film again this weekend and take notes on occurrences of tech, what social implications and ethical things come up (preferably with times). We will meet Sunday at 4pm

Meeting 2 April 13 2020

5pm zoom meeting start time 5pm

Attendants: Justin Amevor, Ann Jicha, Imogen Cleaver-Stigum, Vrandol Perez

Combine important notes/takeaways from the movie: The idea that the sheer amount of screens everywhere and our dependence on tech makes us vulnerable and very dependent on it Jack Jack learns what the robber is from the TV, Mr Incredible learns what Helen is up to through, etc Shows a lot of good uses of tech and importance of getting information Good uses of tech: incredible car with remote, Edna’s security Tech provides one single perspective, so that perspective can be manipulated That tech allows you to manipulate huge amounts of people at once easily Media controls/influences people - positive or negative The media representation of the incredibles influences society’s opinion on them, the law/government opinion on supers It’s easy to be removed from what’s happening on TV and not consider it as “real” as in-person experiences "Brainless desire to replace experience with simulation" Mr. Incredible not considering the reactions of those next to his car when he sees it on TV and tries to steal it Easy to just think that what is onscreen is true Screenslaver discussing the degree of removal (saying people don’t want real experiences) How tech can appeal to the emotions - connection to ethics Central themes Ethics of manipulating people using tech Many different types, positive and negative Project expectations List computing technologies - is the portrayal of the tech realistic (on the website we will make a table: technology - description/analysis) TV, Phones, Tracker, Body cameras, Incredible car, Edna’s security tech, Jack-Jack’s suit, Plane autopilot, Elastigirl's car, Screen goggles, Baby-controller for the baby suit, Police communication, Plot Timeline Movie’s intent/meaning Technology provides a way to manipulate large numbers of people Positive - Ann Sharing accurate information Platform to show that the incredibles are good Tracking used for good: jack jack’s tracker makes parenting easier and helps them keep him safe Communication between individuals Asking for help Maintaining connections Helping helen stay connected/informed when she is on the mission Negative Tracking people used for bad: screenslaver tracking helen, invasive tracking Misinformation, misrepresentation by the media Incredibles shown as evil by media - allowing a single perspective to monopolize the media is dangerous Getting information that you should not have Helen listening in on police conversations? Screenslaver knowing what helen is seeing, etc, having too much power over information Vulnerability Dependence on tech - “screens are everywhere” People are more easily manipulated when they are removed from a situation by technology When more of what you are seeing is tech that’s controlled by some human with an agenda, you can be manipulated easier than if you were experiencing in-person things for yourself Meta-analysis Justin Amevor Prejudice against animation as a method of filmmaking Social implications for the children seeing this - they get the idea that over-dependence on screens can lead to manipulation While the children are watching this on a screen Computing tech used to make the film itself In depth analysis with computing/societal conclusion
